The obverse (heads) design features Lady Liberty, a symbol of vigilance and resolute faithfulness to duty. The reverse (tails) design is emblematic of the principle “To Promote the General Welfare,” the fifth of six principles of American democracy found in the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution. It features Young America against interlocking gears, symbolizing the interconnection of power between the states and the national government. It also features an American Eagle privy mark from an original “coin punch” identified at the United States Mint at Philadelphia. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 oz., .9995 PLATINUM and $100.
Each 2013 American Eagle One Ounce Platinum Proof Coin contains 99.95 percent pure platinum and is packaged in a custom-designed portfolio presentation case.
In 2009, the United States Mint introduced a six-year platinum coin program. This series explores the core concepts of American democracy by highlighting the Preamble of the United States Constitution. This program will examine the six principles of the Preamble as follows:
- 2009--To Form a More Perfect Union
- 2010--To Establish Justice
- 2011--To Insure Domestic Tranquility
- 2012--To Provide for the Common Defence
- 2013--To Promote General Welfare
- 2014--To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity
The themes for the reverse designs for this program are inspired by narratives prepared by John G. Roberts Jr., Chief Justice of the United States, at the request of the United States Mint.
