The 2019 America the Beautiful Quarters Three-Coin Set™ – San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is the fourth of five sites to be honored in 2019 and the 49th overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. The park manages four of five missions in San Antonio. The four missions are active Catholic parishes and the National Park Service maintains a strong partnership with the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The missions were built as walled compounds, which contain the church, living quarters, workshops, storerooms, and bastions, or fortified towers used for defense.
The reverse (tails) design depicts elements of the Spanish Colonial Real coin to pay tribute to the missions. Within the quadrants are symbols of the missions: wheat symbolizes farming, the arches and bell symbolize community, a lion represents Spanish cultural heritage, and a symbol of the San Antonio River represents irrigation methods and life-sustaining resources. Inscriptions are “SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS” “TEXAS,” “2019,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Each three-coin set features an uncirculated quarter from the Philadelphia Mint, an uncirculated quarter from the Denver Mint, and a proof quarter from the San Francisco Mint. The coins are held in a durable plastic card that features a picturesque image and a brief description of the site and the coin, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity on the back of the card.
