John Quincy Adams Presidential Silver Medal
John Quincy Adams was the first son of a President to become President. As a boy he witnessed his father, John Adams, lay the foundation for the United States alongside George Washington and although John Quincy was not a Founding Father, he was certainly a founding son of America. He followed in his father’s footsteps, first becoming a lawyer before being appointed as a diplomat to the Netherlands by George Washington. Under President James Monroe he proved to be a skilled Secretary of State, negotiating the purchase of Florida from Spain, and solidifying much of the present U.S. – Canada border, and helping draft the Monroe Doctrine which became integral to U.S. foreign policy.
With President Monroe’s endorsement, John Quincy Adams became the 6th President of the United States. He flexed his diplomatic prowess by opening up commercial trade with Austria, Brazil, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and the Central American Federation. John Quincy broke ground on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, allowing the swift transport of goods across the Nation, realizing his dream for a stronger domestic economy. After his Presidency, he continued to serve his country in the House of Representatives, fighting for American’s civil liberties, until he collapsed on the House floor at age 80, dying two days later, completing a life in service to his Nation.
