James Madison Presidential Silver Medal
Founding Father James Madison was the youngest member of the Continental Congress, co-author of the Bill of Rights, and the 4th President of the United States. He was a primary author of the United States Constitution and the Federalist Papers, which encouraged the Constitution’s ratification. For these essential contributions to our Nation’s framing document, Madison became known as the “Father of the Constitution.” His Presidency faced a familiar crisis – conflict with Great Britain. In response to a trade ban on U.S. goods and the kidnapping of American sailors, Madison declared war, starting the War of 1812, during which British troops invaded Washinton D.C., burning the Capitol and the White House. Seeing it as his second fight for American independence, Madison appointed James Monroe as Secretary of War, and later endorsed his Presidential run. Under Madison’s leadership, the Treaty of Ghent was signed in 1815, finally ending the war. At the end of his second term and with the Nation once again at peace, James Madison stepped down as President, retiring to his famous Virginia home, Montpelier.
