The United States Mint is proud to debut its first palladium coin made for collectors—the 2018 American Eagle One Ounce Palladium Proof Coin! Featuring two iconic designs by celebrated American sculptor and medallic artist Adolph A. Weinman, this coin represents both past and present in one stunning coin.
This beautiful new addition to the popular American Eagle gold, platinum and silver coin family features an obverse (heads) design with a high-relief likeness of “Winged Liberty” from the “Mercury Dime” obverse design.
The reverse (tails) features Weinman’s eagle design, originally commissioned in 1906 by the American Institute of Architects for its Gold Medal Award, which recognizes individuals whose work has had a lasting impact on architecture. Weinman’s work extended far beyond the Mint and adorned some of America’s most famous monuments and buildings.
Adolph Alexander Weinman trained at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, eventually apprenticing for the renowned Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who President Theodore Roosevelt personally selected to redesign our Nation’s coins in 1905. Weinman considered himself an architectural sculptor, and his work was part of many landmark buildings, including the old Pennsylvania train station in New York City. When the station was demolished to make way for Madison Square Garden, the public outcry energized the historic preservation movement. This effort saved some of Weinman’s sculptures and found them new homes all over the Nation. You can find them preserved today in works like Kansas City’s Eagle Scout Tribute Fountain. In addition, Weinman’s architectural sculptures can be found on major public buildings throughout the country.
American Eagle Palladium Coins promise to be a popular extension of the Mint’s American Eagle series and a unique addition to its overall numismatic portfolio. Palladium is a precious metal that accentuates the intricate detail of Weinman’s designs, which are reminiscent of our turn-of-the-20th century coinage. Similar in color to silver or platinum, palladium has a subtle difference to its appearance. The proof finish gives it a distinct, aesthetic sensibility and style that promise to rekindle or spur the joy of coin collecting. Each 2018 American Eagle One Ounce Palladium Proof Coin is composed of .9995 fine palladium, has a nominal face value of $25, and has the “W” mint mark of the West Point Mint.
