Tuskegee Airmen

The U.S. Army Air Corps force is the stuff of legends—capturing military records and proving African Americans had the mettle to lead, fly military aircraft, and courage to fight in war. While the name may bring to mind the African American military pilots who served with distinction in World War II, the Airmen also included men and women who served as technicians, radio operators, medical personnel, meteorologists, and more, as well as men and women of diverse and mixed heritage. The final coin in the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® Program, the 2021 Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, honors the Alabama location that memorializes the work and accomplishments of roughly 1,000 pilots and more than 15,000 support staff who fought for our Nation and for racial equality at home and abroad.
