After freeing herself from slavery, she personally returned to the South numerous times to lead others out, and provided instruction to still more people who found their own way to freedom. However, she didn’t stop there! In 1862 Harriet Tubman joined the Union Army as a nurse and served in multiple roles, including Army scout and spy.
