This new set continues the series of Presidential $1 Coins and bronze medals issued from 2007 to 2016 by honoring George H.W. Bush and First Spouse Barbara Bush. This unique product includes an uncirculated George H.W. Bush Presidential $1 Coin and a Barbara Bush Bronze Medal bearing a likeness of the First Spouse Gold Coin. The coin and medal are protected in a durable plastic card enhanced with beautiful representations of the President and Mrs. Bush, with issuance information on the back.
George Herbert Walker Bush was born June 12, 1924, in Milton, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II, flying torpedo bombers off the USS San Jacinto. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and U.S. Navy Air Medal with two gold stars. He married Barbara Pierce on January 6, 1945. Bush was sworn in as the 41st President on January 20, 1989, bringing with him his vision of “a kinder and gentler Nation.” As First Spouse, Barbara Bush was known throughout the world as a passionate advocate for literacy and for establishing the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
The obverse (heads) design of the $1 coin features an image of George H.W. Bush and the inscriptions "GEORGE H.W. BUSH," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "41st PRESIDENT," and "1989 - 1993."
The reverse (tails) features an image of the Statue of Liberty. The reverse inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “$1.” The year of minting, mint mark, and the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are incused on the edge of the coins.
The obverse (heads) design of the bronze medal depicts a portrait of Barbara Bush. Inscriptions are “BARBARA BUSH,” “41st,” and “1989-1993.”
The reverse (tails) design depicts a person reading, with an open road symbolizing literacy, knowledge, and life’s journey. The sun represents the promise of a brighter future.
