The bronze medal honors Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew as a leader in the quest for world peace, respect for the Earth’s environment and greater religious understanding. The medal is a replica of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded in 1997.

As the Archbishop of Constantinople – New Rome, Patriarch Bartholomew is the recognized spiritual leader of nearly 300 million Orthodox Christians around the world.

The obverse features a portrait of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the inscriptions “ARCHBISHOP OF CONSTANTINOPLE AND ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH” and “BARTHOLOMEW.”

The reverse design features an image of a globe with North America and South America on the left, Europe and Africa on the right, and longitude and latitude lines. In the center appears a lighthouse below a two-headed bird. Inscribed at bottom is “APOSTLE / OF LOVE / PEACE AND / HOPE.” The inscription around the top edge is in Greek and transcribed as “GOD IS LOVE”, and on the bottom edge is “ACT OF U.S. CONGRESS 1997.”
