Christa McAuliffe Silver Dollar — 2021 Commemorative Coin Program —
Join us as we commemorate Christa McAuliffe with the 2021 Christa McAuliffe Silver Dollar, our new coin program created under the Christa McAuliffe Commemorative Coin Act of 2019. This Silver Dollar features designs crafted in 99.9 percent silver to honor the life and legacy of Mrs. McAuliffe, a dedicated teacher who was selected to be the first civilian in space under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Teacher in Space Program. We invite you to add these wonderful keepsakes to your collection or gift these treasures to the teachers, scientists, space enthusiasts, or students in your life.
The Christa McAuliffe Silver Dollar is a magnificent tribute to her extraordinary life. During her time as an educator, Mrs. McAuliffe would teach American history, civics, and economics, as well as junior high and high school social studies. During her brief time as a non-astronaut civilian with NASA, she would make history.

Proof Coin (Obverse)
The Silver Dollar obverse, or “heads” side, features a portrait of Mrs. McAuliffe, who was chosen in 1985 from more than 11,000 applicants to be the first participant in NASA’s then-new Teacher in Space Program.

Uncirculated Coin (Reverse)
The Silver Dollar’s reverse, or “tails” side, design depicts Christa McAuliffe as a teacher, smiling as she points forward and upward, symbolizing the future, as high school-age students look on. The seven stars above them pay tribute to those who perished in the Challenger tragedy. Among the coin’s inscriptions is “I TOUCH THE FUTURE. I TEACH.,” a belief that Christa McAuliffe held deeply throughout her career.
