The ornament celebrates Zitkala-Ša’s accomplishments as a musician, composer, and writer. Red birds represent her Native name, and the diamond pattern on the edge of the ornament is inspired by traditional décor to represent the preservation of Native customs and traditions. The background represents a view of the Yankton Reservation and Missouri River.
The coin’s reverse (tails) design depicts Zitkala-Ša in traditional Yankton Sioux dress. She holds a book, representing her work as an author as well as her successful activism for Native American rights. Behind her, a stylized sun represents her work on The Sun Dance Opera, while a cardinal symbolizes her name, meaning “Red Bird.” A Yankton Sioux-inspired diamond pattern sits underneath the sun. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “AUTHOR,” “ACTIVIST,” “COMPOSER,” “25 CENTS,” and “ZITKALA-ŠA.”
