The ornament is a nod to one of more than 50 albums she recorded. Cruz electrified audiences worldwide with her famous catchphrase, “¡Azùcar!” (“Sugar!” in Spanish.) What began as a seemingly simple request for sugar in her coffee while at a restaurant, “¡Azùcar!” took on greater significance as a rallying cry in remembrance of all enslaved Afro-Latinos in Cuba and across the Caribbean who were forced to work the sugar cane fields.
