On June 6, 1997, the U.S. Mint made numismatic history when it produced its first legal tender platinum piece—the American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin. This lustrous platinum coin’s $100 face value is the highest–ever denomination for a U.S. legal tender coin.
In 2017, the U.S. Mint is proud to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its “most precious” of the precious metals coins by issuing them with their original 1997 designs.
The obverse (heads) depicts the “Portrait of Liberty.” Liberty looks to the future in this modern interpretation of an American icon, the Statue of Liberty. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “2017,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The reverse (tails) depicts an eagle soaring above America. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “.9995 PLATINUM 1 OZ.,” and “$100.”
Each platinum coin is encapsulated and packaged in a custom–designed lacquered presentation case accompanied by a 20th anniversary Certificate of Authenticity.
