In 2005, President Bush signed the Presidential $1 Coin Act authorizing the United States Mint to strike $1 coins honoring America’s Presidents in the order in which they served. This coin, the ninth in the Presidential $1 Coin Program, honors President William Henry Harrison.

The fifth U.S. President to hail from Virginia, William Harrison was born in 1773. During a distinguished Army career, Harrison served as secretary of the Northwest Territory and governor of the Indiana Territory. He gained national fame and the nickname “Old Tippecanoe” from victories at the Battle of Tippecanoe and the Battle of the Thames.

Harrison served in the Ohio State Senate, as a U.S. Representative and Senator from Ohio, and as U.S. minister to Columbia. In 1840, the Whig Party selected Harrison as its presidential nominee and John Tyler as his vice presidential running mate. Their presidential election slogan “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too” became the first and still one of the most memorable of presidential campaign slogans. Harrison ran against incumbent President Martin Van Buren and won in a landslide.
