General George C. Marshall graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1901. He served a distinguished career in the United States Army. In 1939, he was appointed United States Army Chief of the General Staff. In 1947, he was appointed Secretary of State for the United States. General Marshall was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his development and implementation of the European Recovery Program and subsequently served for one year as the Secretary of Defense. General Marshall was both a graduate of and instructor at the Infantry and Cavalry School, as well as a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College.

In 1915, General Dwight D. Eisenhower began a career of distinguished public service, reaching the highest positions of military and civil leadership in the United States. He excelled early in his career while serving under Generals Pershing, MacArthur and Krueger. After Pearl Harbor, he was invited to Washington, DC, for a special assignment by General Marshall. After many successes leading troops including serving as Supreme Commander of the troops invading France on D-Day, he became President of Columbia University. In 1951, he took leave from his position at the University to assume supreme command over the new NATO forces being assembled. It was during his tenure at this position that he was persuaded to enter as a candidate for the presidency in 1952. With a sweeping victory, he was elected the 34th President of the United States. He was an honor graduate from the United States Army Command and General Staff College.

Celebrate the 132nd anniversary of the founding of the College while honoring the lives and legacies of Generals George Marshall and Dwight Eisenhower with this 2013 5-Star Generals Proof Silver Dollar. The finish is extraordinarily brilliant and features sharp relief and a mirror-like background to highlight the images on both sides of the coin.

The obverse (heads side) features Generals George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower against a striped background with the 5-star insignia above their heads. Inscriptions are GEORGE C. MARSHALL, DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, IN GOD WE TRUST, 2013 and LIBERTY.

The reverse (tails) features the Leavenworth Lamp with the heraldic crest of Fort Leavenworth on its side. U.S. ARMY COMMAND AND GENERAL STAFF COLLEGE is inscribed on the lower half of the design. Other inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM and FORT LEAVENWORTH.

The 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program recognizes five of the greatest leaders of our time, United States Army 5-Star Generals George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, Henry “Hap” Arnold and Omar Bradley. These men are the only World War II 5-Star Generals and each is an alumnus of the United States Army Command and General Staff College. This commemorative coin program also celebrates the 132nd anniversary of the founding of the College.

A surcharge of $35 for each $5 gold coin, $10 for each silver dollar and $5 for each clad half-dollar sold is authorized to be paid to the Command and General Staff College Foundation to help finance its support of the College.
