This is the third coin released in 2012 in the First Spouse Gold Coin Series and features Caroline Harrison. It is a one-half ounce 24-karat gold coin struck in proof quality, giving it a frosted foreground and a mirror-like background. The obverse features a portrait of Caroline Harrison. The reverse represents Mrs. Harrison’s love of flowers, depicting a close-up of an orchid and paint brushes. This coin is encapsulated and packaged in a custom-designed, highly polished, dome-chested, lacquered hardwood presentation case accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

This marks the sixth year of the First Spouse Gold Coin Series, the United States Mint’s first coin program to feature our Nation’s first spouses. A minimum of four one-half ounce, $10 24-karat gold coins will be minted and released annually in the order the spouses served in the position. The coins are minted in proof and uncirculated qualities and are available individually. Each First Spouse Gold Coin coincides with the release of the corresponding circulating Presidential $1 Coin. In 2012, the United States Mint will release four coins in the series – Alice Paul and the Suffrage Movement, Frances Cleveland (first term), Caroline Harrison, and Frances Cleveland (second term).
The obverse of this coin was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Frank Morris and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso. The reverse was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Donna Weaver and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles L. Vickers.
