2009 First Spouse Series One-Half Ounce Gold Proof Coin - Margaret Taylor (X38)

This is the fifth coin released in 2009 in the First Spouse Gold Coin Series and features Margaret Taylor, who was the wife of President Zachary Taylor. This coin is a one-half ounce 24-karat gold coin struck in proof condition, giving it a frosted foreground and a mirror-like background. The obverse features a portrait of Margaret Taylor and the reverse depicts her helping an injured soldier during the Seminole War. This coin is encapsulated and packaged in a custom-designed, highly polished, dome-chested, lacquered hardwood presentation case accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Director of the United States Mint.

The Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coins have a maximum mintage of 40,000 across all product options. The ratio of proof coins to uncirculated coins will be determined by customer demand within the total maximum issuance of 40,000.

This marks the third year of the First Spouse Gold Coin Series, the United States Mint’s first coin program to feature our Nation’s first spouses. A minimum of four one-half ounce, $10 24-karat gold coins will be minted and released annually in the order the spouses served in the White House. The coins are minted in proof and uncirculated condition and are available individually. Each First Spouse Gold Coin coincides with the release of the corresponding circulating Presidential $1 Coin. In 2009, the United States Mint will release five coins in the series - Anna Harrison, Letitia Tyler, Julia Tyler, Sarah Polk and Margaret Taylor.

The obverse of this coin was designed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles L. Vickers. The reverse was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Mary Beth Zeitz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz.
